Former Chilean President Sebastian Pinera tragically died in a helicopter accident in southern Chile.

There is a widespread sense of sorrow across the country as a consequence of his dying. He had served for two terms in the United States government.

It has been brought to the attention of the public by Carolina Toha, the Minister of the Interior of Chile, that Pinera has passed away.

During the years 2010 to 2014, Pinera held the position of head of state, and then again from 2018 until 2022.

He led Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic and positioned Chile as one of the top five nations in vaccination rates against the disease.

The cause of the accident was not immediately disclosed, but a specialized team is investigating the crash site.

Pinera's remains will be placed at the former Congress headquarters in Santiago, with viewing restricted to a select few.
