He was the second of three sons and was born on June 5th, 1925 in Harvey, Illinois. Hayes was the second son.

Over the course of his education, he received degrees in English and music from DePauw University and Thornton Township High School.

It was a vaudeville-style production called Funzapoppin, and he was able to secure a singing and acting role in the production.
