Vijayakanth, the renowned actor-politician and founder of DMDK, has sadly passed away in Chennai. His final resting place will be honoured with state honours.

Renowned actor and politician Vijayakanth sadly passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on December 28. Vijayakanth was admitted to MIOT Hospital in Chennai due to his declining health. According to the hospital, Vijayakanth required ventilatory support after being admitted for pneumonia.

Earlier in the day, his party announced that Vijayakanth had tested positive for COVID and was placed on a ventilator due to breathing difficulties. However, according to the hospital bulletin, he fought against pneumonia. According to hospital sources, the party released the statement prior to receiving the results for the second round of samples.

The final ceremonies for the late Vijayakanth will be conducted with the utmost respect at the party office in Tamil Nadu’s Koyambedu on December 29, as announced by the party in a statement on Thursday.

As per the statement, the ceremony is set to take place at approximately 4.45 p.m. on Friday. The Chief Minister, MK Stalin, has announced that the DMDK chief will receive a dignified state funeral.

Since November of this year, the individual in question has been experiencing health challenges. On December 15, Premalatha Vijayakanth assumed the role of general secretary of DMDK.

In her inaugural speech as the General Secretary, Premalatha Vijayakanth conveyed her dedication to the party and its members. Speaking in Tamil, she mentioned that she has been entrusted with the role of general secretary by Vijayakanth. This party was established with a strong focus on the well-being of the people, and I am committed to collaborating closely with each and every one of you.

Vijayakanth’s political career and career path

Vijayakanth gained widespread recognition and earned the nickname “Captain” for his impressive performances in military roles in films. Regarding his political career, the individual transitioned from acting to politics in 2005 and established the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party. The party made its first appearance in the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections and received 10 percent of the total vote share. In 2011, Vijayakanth formed an alliance with the AIADMK in the Assembly elections. The Jayalalithaa-led bloc emerged victorious in the polls, with Vijayakanth assuming the role of Leader of the Opposition. His impressive performance in the Assembly debate captured the attention of the state and signalled his readiness to challenge the established political parties that have dominated Tamil Nadu for decades.

Vijayakanth held the position of leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011 to 2016. Later, due to disagreements, the party ended its association with the AIADMK, leading to a large number of resignations by DMDK MLAs. He has had the honour of serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly on two occasions, representing the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies.

Vijayakanth is receiving an increasing number of tributes.
