The US Marine Corps is searching for a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter that went missing while traveling from Nevada to California. The helicopter was reported to be overdue while moving from a base near Las Vegas to one in San Diego. The Marines were assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

Fire crews were notified about the missing aircraft at 02:20 local time on Wednesday and dispatched crews to an area near Lake Marina, California. The CH-53E Super Stallion, first put into active service in 1981, is widely regarded as a mainstay of the Marine Corps’ aviation fleet and is typically used for transport purposes. In its standard configuration, it can accommodate up to 37 passengers. The helicopter is also used by the navies of the United States and Japan and can be used for the transportation of supplies and engaging in combat.

In August, a pilot who served in the Marine Corps died when his F/A-18 Hornet jet crashed in the same area close to the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. There have been multiple instances where Marine Corps Super Stallions have been involved in serious accidents, such as in April 2018 when four soldiers were killed when their Super Stallion encountered an accident near El Centro, California, while they were participating in a training mission. Two Super Stallions collided over the Pacific Ocean close to Oahu in Hawaii in January 2016, resulting in the deaths of twelve Marines.
